Sunnah Grains

Talbeena in the Sunnah

Talbeena is not a modern invention dressed in heritage packaging — it is one of the few foods mentioned by name in the earliest and most authentic collections of hadith. This page gathers the key narrations and their context, so you can see the tradition for yourself.

The narrations

In Sahih al-Bukhari, it is narrated that when a member of the family of Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) passed away, she would order that talbina be prepared, and she would say that she heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:

"At-talbina soothes the heart of the sick and takes away some of the sorrow."
— narrated in Sahih al-Bukhari (Book of Foods) and Sahih Muslim; wording as translated from the Arabic التلبينة مجمة لفؤاد المريض، تذهب ببعض الحزن

Other narrations describe talbina being recommended within the Prophet's ﷺ household for those who were unwell or grieving — a gentle dish for tender moments. Barley itself appears throughout the Sunnah as a staple of the Prophet's ﷺ simple table: barley bread, barley porridge, barley soaked in milk.

What this means — and what it doesn't

We share these narrations as heritage, with love and respect. The hadith speak in their own voice, and believers have honoured this dish for fourteen centuries. As a food company we add only this: talbeena is a food, not a medicine. We make it the traditional way and make no medical claims for it — its worth lies in its history, its ingredients and its taste.

A dish woven into Muslim life

  • In grief — the narrations specifically describe talbina prepared in houses of mourning: warm, soft nourishment when appetite fades.
  • In Ramadan — a slow-release wholegrain bowl at suhoor, and gentle comfort at iftar.
  • In daily life — across the subcontinent's Unani tradition, barley porridge remained everyday family food for generations.

Reviving the Sunnah, honestly

Sunnah Grains exists to return this dish to Pakistani tables the way it was: stone-milled whole barley, milk, dates, honey — never refined sugar, never artificial anything. If talbeena is new to you, start with What is Talbeena? and the simple method in How to Make Talbeena.

Begin the ritual

Every Sunnah Grains blend starts with the same barley the narrations describe — stone-milled daily in small batches.
