Pakistan grows oats for its cattle and imports them for its breakfast. This is the guide to the grain: what it is, which cut to buy, what a bowl carries, how to cook it, and how it stands against the paratha.

What oats are, and what they are not
Oats are the grain of the plant Avena sativa, a grass in the same family as wheat and barley. The seed, called a groat once the husk is off, is steamed and pressed flat into the flakes on every packet, and cooked in water or milk it becomes the porridge the world eats for breakfast. In American English both the grain and the porridge are called oatmeal; oats and oatmeal are the same thing. Pakistan calls the grain jai (جئی); the dish made from it is jai ka dalia.
Three things oats are not, because Pakistani kitchens mix them up daily:
- Not jau. Jau (جو) is barley, the grain of talbeena. Oats and barley are cousins with their own tastes and textures. Oats in Urdu: jai or jau? settles the dictionary argument.
- Not dalia. Dalia is a dish of cracked grain, usually wheat, not a grain itself. Oats ka dalia is simply porridge made from oats.
- Not a nut. The jar name "oats with nuts" means oats mixed with almonds and walnuts. Plain oats contain no nuts: Are oats nuts? for anyone managing a nut allergy.
Oats are also not a medicine. Their one famous component is beta-glucan, a soluble fibre: in the EU, oat beta-glucan is authorised to contribute to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels, with the effect coming from 3 g a day. That is a claim about the fibre in oats in general, not about any one bowl or jar. We have not measured the beta-glucan in ours, and we say so.
The four cuts, and what "white oats" means
Every oats product starts as the same grain and differs only in how much it has been cut and pressed. The shelf in Pakistan adds one name of its own.
| Type | How it is made | Cooking time | In the bowl |
|---|---|---|---|
| GroatsRarely on a Pakistani shelf | The whole hulled kernel | 40 minutes or more | Chewy, separate grains |
| Steel-cutA slow weekend bowl | Groats chopped into two or three pieces | 20 to 30 minutes | Nutty, chewy, holds its shape |
| Rolled (whole rolled)Everyday nashta, masala bowl, overnight jar, kheer. What Sunnah Grains uses. | Groats steamed and pressed flat, nothing removed | 3 to 4 minutes | Soft with body, flakes stay whole |
| QuickSmall children, a quick sweet bowl | Rolled thinner, cut smaller | 1 to 3 minutes | Soft, creamy |
| InstantHot water in a mug; most flavoured sachets | Thinnest, smallest, pre-cooked | Under a minute | Smooth to pasty |
| "White oats"Porridge; a poor masala bowl | Not a cut: the Pakistani shelf name for plain rolled or quick oats with the husk off | 1 to 3 minutes | Usually quick oats |
Plain, every cut carries the same grain and the same label numbers; what changes is texture, time, and what gets added later. Many flavoured sachets list starch, sugar or a flavour powder before anything else, which is why they turn to paste; read the list. The full comparison, with the ratio and time for each cut, is in Which oats to buy in Pakistan.
Where Pakistan's oats come from: the crop, the shelf and the two bowls
Pakistan grows oats mostly as winter fodder for animals, not as a food grain, so food-grade oats are imported, and prices swing with the rupee. The shelf holds plain grain in local mills' packets, imported tins and bags, flavoured instant sachets, and ready jars like our oats in Pakistan.
What Pakistani kitchens do with the grain is the part the imported packets never mention. The bowl here is one of two things: meetha, oats cooked in milk with badam, akhrot, khajoor and kishmish, the way a kheer is loaded; or namkeen, oats cooked in water the way a khichdi is cooked, with a zeera tarka, vegetables and masala, finished with lemon and hara dhania. We sell both bowls as finished jars: Oats with Nuts is the meetha one, Masala Oats the namkeen one, on a rolled oat chosen because the flake holds its shape in a savoury simmer.

Oats nutrition per 100 g and per bowl
Plain rolled oats first, then our two jars from their labels. A bowl is 30 g of dry oats, three heaped tablespoons; a hungry adult eats 45 g.
| Per 100 g, dry | Plain rolled oats | Masala Oats | Oats with Nuts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Energy | 379 kcal | 383 kcal | 384 kcal |
| Protein | 13.2 g | 24.4 g, oats plus real chicken | 11.2 g, oats plus nuts |
| Dietary fibre | 10.1 g | 9.9 g | 9.1 g |
| Fat | 6.5 g | 7.8 g | 10.9 g, from the nuts |
| Sugars | 1 g | 5.5 g, natural | 19.1 g, mostly from dates, raisins and dried fruit |
| Sodium | 6 mg | 268 mg | 5 mg |

| Per 30 g bowl | Plain rolled oats | Masala Oats | Oats with Nuts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Energy, dry | about 114 kcal | 115 kcal | 115 kcal |
| Protein | about 4 g | 7.3 g | 3.4 g |
| Fibre | about 3 g | 3.0 g | 2.7 g |

Three things the tables show. Oats are a genuinely high-fibre grain: about 10 g per 100 g, part of it the soluble fibre beta-glucan above. Protein is good for a cereal and modest for a meal, which is why real chicken takes Masala Oats to 24 g per 100 g and why a sweet bowl is better cooked in milk than water. And the sugar line is where packets differ most: plain oats have almost none, our sweet jar carries 19 g per 100 g mostly from fruit, and a flavoured sachet can carry more from refined sugar, so read that row on any packet before the front of it. What each nutrient does, ingredient by ingredient and by evidence tier, is in Oats benefits.
Benefits, by how sure we are
- Fact, from the label and USDA: the fibre, protein, mineral and sugar numbers above. Plain oats contain manganese, phosphorus, magnesium, zinc and thiamin.
- Approved in the EU, for oat beta-glucan in general: the cholesterol wording above, at 3 g a day, not measured in any one bowl.
- Possible benefit: a bowl with fibre and protein tends to hold hunger longer than refined flour. Results vary by portion and person.
- Tradition: "oats for strength" and "badam for the brain" are kitchen wisdom, not trial results.
If you have diabetes, a heart condition or a nut allergy, ask your doctor what fits your plate.
How to cook oats, three ways
One ratio runs through all three: about one part oats to three or four parts liquid by volume, which is 30 g, three heaped tablespoons, in 200 ml for a soft bowl, and less liquid for a thick one, with a pinch of salt every time, sweet or savoury. The stove and microwave methods are our standard methods for both jars; the overnight bowl is a serving idea, not a tested recipe.
On the stove, 3 to 4 minutes
- Warm 200 ml of milk (meetha) or water (namkeen) in a small pan.
- Stir in 30 to 45 g of oats, or of the finished mix if the jar already holds the nuts or the masala. Simmer 3 to 4 minutes, stirring now and then.
- Rest a minute off the heat; the bowl thickens as it stands. Sweet: a chopped date, a few nuts, a pinch of elaichi. Savoury: lemon, hara dhania, a fried egg.
In the microwave, 2 to 3 minutes
- Oats and liquid in a deep bowl, the same ratio; the bowl must be twice the depth of the mix or it boils over.
- Two minutes on high, stir, one more minute. Rest a minute.
Overnight, no cooking
- Rolled oats only; instant dissolves and steel-cut stays hard. Oats in a jar, cold milk until just covered, a pinch of salt, dates or raisins if you like.
- Lid on, fridge, six hours or overnight. Nuts go on in the morning so they stay crisp. In a Lahore summer this is the bowl you want.
From scratch, both Pakistani bowls, with quantities: the desi masala oats recipe and oats with dry fruits, five ways. For the bowls children finish before the van arrives, Nashta for school mornings.
Oats vs paratha, cornflakes and wheat: the Pakistani breakfast table
The honest comparison is not oats against a Western porridge but oats against what is actually on a Pakistani table at eight in the morning. USDA values for the portions stated where a number is given; composition, not a verdict on anyone's breakfast.
| Breakfast | Calories | Protein | Fibre |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plain rolled oats, 30 g, in 200 ml milkWhole grain plus milk | about 240 kcal | about 10.5 g | about 3 g |
| One atta paratha, about 90 gWhole wheat and about 12 g of fat before extra ghee | about 290 kcal | about 6 g | about 9 g |
| One atta roti, 40 g, with 2 eggsWhole wheat plus eggs; the strongest plate here | about 275 kcal | about 16 g | about 4 g |
| Two slices of white toast, 50 g, with jamRefined flour, plus the jam's sugar | about 145 kcal plus jam | about 4.5 g | 1.5 g |
| Cornflakes or sweet cereal, 30 g, with milkRefined maize or wheat, sugar, salt, plus milk; no USDA entry for a generic box, so read its panel | see the box | mostly the milk's | very little |
Oats or wheat, which is better
The question comes up because both are whole grains on the same table. Atta roti and wheat dalia hold their own against oats on protein and total fibre; what oats add is the soluble fibre beta-glucan and a four-minute cooking time. The thing to avoid is the refined version of either: maida on one side, a flavoured instant sachet on the other.
Oats vs cornflakes and sweet cereals
Cornflakes are maize with the germ and bran milled out, cooked, flaked and toasted with sugar and salt; oats are the whole groat pressed flat. The box's own panel is the comparison: read its sugar per 30 g against 0.3 g in plain oats, its fibre against 3 g, its sodium against 6 mg, and its first ingredient against the word oats.
Four fair conclusions. Against the light breakfasts, white bread and sweet cereal, oats win on fibre and lose nothing: the whole grain against the refined one. Against the paratha, oats are lighter and the paratha has more fibre than people expect, because atta is whole wheat; the paratha's problem is the fat and the habit of eating three. Against eggs and roti, oats are not better; they are quicker. And against wheat dalia and talbeena, oats are a cousin, not a rival; dalia is cracked whole wheat and talbeena is stone-milled barley, creamier and slower, and the bowls share many kitchens. The whole week, plate by plate, is in Healthy breakfast in Pakistan; the barley side in Talbeena vs oats; the noodle packet in Masala oats vs instant noodles.
The five-point label test for any oats packet
Hold every brand to this, including us. If you are searching for the best oatmeal brand in Pakistan, this is the test, not the front of the packet.
- Oats first. The first ingredient on the list should be oats. If a "premium mix" leads with anything else, walk away.
- No filler. Starch, maltodextrin and "cereal flour" make the packet cheaper, not the bowl better.
- Sweetness you can name. Dates and raisins are ingredients. "Sugar" and "flavour" are not a reason to eat oats.
- Seasoning you can name. Savoury oats should say what the seasoning is: real chicken and real vegetables, or a flavour packet.
- A certificate you can read. Halal, food-safety and licensing paperwork that is published, not just printed on the lid.
Sunnah Grains publishes the full ingredient list and the nutrition table on every product page, and the original certificates on the certifications page. For the shelf compared, read Best oats in Pakistan.
What a bowl of oats costs: per kilo, per jar, per bowl
Plain oats are priced by the grain and the packet: loose and local packets are the cheapest per kilo, imported tins the dearest. A ready jar is priced by what is added to the oats, and almonds, walnuts, dates and real chicken cost more than starch and flavour powder. The useful number is never the one on the front; it is the price per 100 g, and then per 30 g bowl. Sunnah Grains prices, printed live from the store:
Masala Oats from Rs.1,649 PKR, Oats with Nuts from Rs.1,749 PKR, in Small, Medium and Extra Large jars, with a flat Rs 280 delivery fee anywhere in Pakistan.
Per bowl, Medium is the cheapest jar of the three on the list price, and Extra Large edges past it by Rs 3 to 4 a bowl once the delivery fee is spread across 30 bowls; Oats with Nuts Medium and Masala Oats Medium are preselected here. Questions people ask
What are oats?
Oats are the grain of the plant Avena sativa, a whole grain that is steamed and rolled flat into flakes. Cooked in water or milk they make porridge. Oats are called jai in Urdu and are a different grain from barley (jau) and wheat.
What are oats called in Pakistan?
In Pakistan oats are sold as oats, white oats or oatmeal, and called jai (جئی) in Urdu. Jau (جو) is barley, the grain of talbeena, and dalia is a dish of cracked grain rather than a grain itself.
Are oats and oatmeal the same?
Yes. Oatmeal is the American name for oats and for the porridge cooked from them. A packet labelled oatmeal in Pakistan is rolled or quick oats; the word says nothing about the cut or what has been added.
Are oats and barley the same?
No. Oats are Avena sativa and make oat porridge; barley is jau and is the grain talbeena is made from. They are related whole grains, but they taste and cook differently.
Are oats nuts?
No. Oats are a cereal grain. The confusion comes from the jar name oats with nuts, which is oats mixed with almonds, walnuts and other nuts. Plain oats contain no nuts.
Which type of oats is best?
Whole rolled oats are the best everyday choice: the whole grain pressed flat, cooked in three to four minutes, with nothing removed and nothing added. Steel-cut oats are excellent but slow; instant oats are convenient, and flavoured instant sachets often list starch and sugar before anything else.
Which is better, oats or wheat?
Neither. Atta roti and wheat dalia are whole wheat and match oats on protein and total fibre; oats bring the soluble fibre beta-glucan and cook in four minutes. The refined version of either, maida or an instant sachet, is the one to avoid.
Is oats a good breakfast in Pakistan?
Yes. Whole rolled oats are a whole grain with about 4 g of protein and 3 g of fibre in a 30 g bowl before milk, cook in three to four minutes, and take both sweet and savoury Pakistani flavours. Pick a packet whose first ingredient is oats and whose sugar is named or absent.
How much oats should I eat in a day?
A standard bowl is 30 to 45 g of dry oats, about three to five heaped tablespoons. One bowl a day is an ordinary whole-grain breakfast; the Pakistan Dietary Guidelines ask for half of a day's cereals to be whole grain, and a bowl of oats is one way to get there.
Do oats grow in Pakistan?
Oats are grown in Pakistan mainly as winter fodder for animals, not as a food grain. Food-grade oats are imported; the whole rolled oats in Sunnah Grains jars come from abroad.
How much do oats cost in Pakistan?
Masala Oats from Rs.1,649 PKR, Oats with Nuts from Rs.1,749 PKR, in Small, Medium and Extra Large jars, with a flat Rs 280 delivery fee anywhere in Pakistan. Plain oats cost less per kilo; a ready jar costs more because of what is added to the oats. Cash on delivery is available across Pakistan.
Are Sunnah Grains oats halal and certified?
Yes. Sunnah Grains is Pakistan's first and only certified oats brand: ISO 22000 and HACCP food-safety certified, halal certified including the chicken seasoning in Masala Oats, licensed by the Punjab Food Authority and D-U-N-S registered, with the original certificates published on the certifications page.
