Recipe: Oats with Dry Fruits, Five Ways to Make It at Home
A 10-minute milk bowl, no-cook overnight oats, a roast-ahead premix, oats kheer and date laddu — with the ratio that makes all five work and the nuts that earn their place.
Oats with dry fruits is whole rolled oats cooked or soaked in milk, then finished with nuts and dried fruit: almonds, walnuts, pistachios, raisins, dates. The base takes ten minutes: half a cup of oats, a cup and a half of liquid, a pinch of salt, and the nuts stirred in at the end so they stay crisp. Everything else on this page is a variation on that one idea.
In Pakistan “dry fruits” means both the nuts and the dried fruit, which is why a good jar of oats with nuts has raisins and dates in it as well as badam and akhrot. This page is the recipes; for what belongs in a ready jar, the calories per bowl and the benefits, read our dry fruit oats guide. If you are still choosing a base, which oats to buy in Pakistan covers the packet; this page is about what goes on top of it, and how. (Our own two jars are in the oats collection.)
Which dry fruits go with oats
Every nut and fruit below brings something different to a bowl. Quantities are per single serving, about half a cup of dry oats. More than three tablespoons of nuts in one bowl and the oats stop being the point.
| Dry fruit | Urdu | What it brings | Prep | Per bowl |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Almonds | بادام | Crunch, vitamin E, protein; the default | Roughly chopped or slivered; soak overnight only if you prefer them soft | 1 tbsp (8–10 almonds) |
| Walnuts | اخروٹ | Buttery, slightly bitter edge; the richest common nut in plant omega-3 | Break by hand; toast 2 minutes in a dry pan to lose the bitterness | 1 tbsp (2–3 halves) |
| Pistachios | پستہ | Colour and a sweeter nut flavour | Shelled, unsalted, slivered | 1 tsp – 1 tbsp |
| Cashews | کاجو | Creaminess; soften into the milk if added early | Halved; early for creamy, late for crunch | 1 tbsp |
| Dates | کھجور | The sweetener; fibre; melt into cooked oats | Pitted and chopped; dry dates (چھوہارا) need 20 minutes' soak | 2 soft dates |
| Raisins | کشمش | Quick sweetness, iron; plump up in hot milk | Rinse if dusty | 1–2 tsp |
| Dried figs | انجیر | Chew, seeds, deep sweetness | Chopped small; soak 10 minutes if very hard | 1 fig |
| Pumpkin seeds | کدو کے بیج | Magnesium, zinc; a green crunch | Raw or 1 minute toasted | 1 tsp |
Skip anything salted, anything sugar-coated (candied fruit, sugared cranberries), and desiccated coconut unless you are making laddu. Salted nuts fight the sweetness of the dates; sugared fruit turns breakfast into mithai.
The ratio behind all five recipes
For a soft, spoonable bowl, use one part rolled oats to three parts liquid by volume: half a cup of oats to a cup and a half of milk and water. For a thicker bowl that holds a spoon upright, one to two and a half. A pinch of salt goes in every time, sweet or not; it is the difference between oats that taste of milk and oats that taste of nothing. Dried fruit goes in at the start if you want it soft and melting, at the end if you want chew. Nuts always go in at the end, or on top.
1. The 10-minute milk bowl (doodh wale oats)
Serves 1 · Prep 3 min · Cook 7 min · Total 10 min · Small saucepan
Ingredients
- ½ cup (45 g) whole rolled oats (جئی)
- 1 cup (250 ml) full-fat milk
- ½ cup (125 ml) water
- A pinch of salt
- 2 soft dates, pitted and chopped
- 1 tsp raisins
- 1 tbsp almonds, roughly chopped
- 1 tbsp walnuts, broken
- ¼ tsp ground cardamom (optional)
Method
- Bring the milk, water and salt to a gentle simmer over medium heat. Do not walk away; milk boils over the moment you do.
- Stir in the oats, dates and raisins. Turn the heat to medium-low and simmer 4–5 minutes, stirring every minute, until the oats are tender and the liquid has thickened to a loose porridge. It will thicken further as it sits.
- Toast the nuts while the oats cook: almonds and walnuts in a dry frying pan for 2 minutes, shaking the pan, until they smell nutty. Optional, and worth it.
- Rest. Take the pan off the heat, cover, and wait 1 minute. Stir in the cardamom if using.
- Finish. Pour into a bowl and scatter the nuts on top. Taste before adding anything sweet; two dates and a teaspoon of raisins are usually enough.
Too thick? A splash of hot milk and one stir. Too thin? Another minute on the heat. Water only: works, but use a full pinch of salt and add a spoon of dahi at the end for body.
2. Overnight dry fruit oats (no cooking)
Serves 1 · Prep 5 min · Fridge 6–8 hours · Jar or glass with a lid
Ingredients
- ½ cup (45 g) rolled oats
- ¾ cup (180 ml) cold milk
- 2 tbsp plain dahi
- 1 tsp chia seeds (optional; they thicken it)
- 2 soft dates, chopped, or 1 tsp dates powder
- 1 tbsp raisins
- A pinch of salt
- In the morning: 1 tbsp chopped almonds and pistachios, 2 walnut halves
Method
- Put the oats, milk, dahi, chia, dates, raisins and salt in the jar. Stir until no dry oats remain at the bottom.
- Lid on. Refrigerate at least 6 hours; overnight is easier.
- In the morning, stir, loosen with a spoon of milk if it has set firm, and add the nuts. Nuts left in overnight go soft; that is the only rule of overnight oats worth remembering.
Eat cold from the fridge; in a Lahore summer this is the version you want. Keeps 2 days made up. Instant oats turn to paste here; use rolled.
3. Roasted dry fruit oats premix (a jar for three weeks)
Makes about 12 servings · Prep 10 min · Roast 15 min · Total 25 min plus cooling · Wide frying pan, airtight jar
This is the recipe most people who search “oats with dry fruits” actually want: a jar you can pour from at 7:40 am. Roasting the oats is what separates a premix from a mix; it deepens the flavour and keeps the jar smelling fresh for weeks.
Ingredients
- 2 cups (180 g) whole rolled oats
- ½ cup almonds, roughly chopped
- ¼ cup walnuts, broken
- ¼ cup cashews, halved
- 2 tbsp pumpkin seeds
- ½ cup raisins
- ½ cup dried figs or dry dates, chopped small
- ½ tsp ground cardamom (optional)
- ½ tsp salt
Method
- Roast the oats in a dry pan over medium heat, stirring, for 6–8 minutes until faintly golden and smelling like toast. Tip onto a plate.
- Roast the nuts and seeds in the same pan for 4–5 minutes until the almonds have a few brown spots. Watch the walnuts; they burn first.
- Cool everything completely. Warm oats in a sealed jar sweat and go stale.
- Mix the oats, nuts, seeds, raisins, figs, cardamom and salt. Store in an airtight jar in a cool cupboard for up to 3 weeks.
- To serve: ½ cup premix in a bowl, 1 cup hot milk over it, stir, cover 3–4 minutes. For a hotter, thicker bowl, simmer 2 minutes instead.
If you would rather not build the jar yourself, this is exactly the idea behind our Oats with Nuts: rolled oats, almonds, pistachios, cashews, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, raisins, dried banana and apple, sweetened only with dates powder. The dry fruit oats guide explains how to read any brand's label, including ours, and what a bowl costs.
4. Oats kheer with dry fruits
Serves 3 · Prep 5 min · Cook 15 min · Total 20 min · Heavy-based saucepan
Ingredients
- ½ cup (45 g) rolled oats
- 2½ cups (625 ml) full-fat milk
- 3 green cardamom pods, cracked
- A pinch of salt
- 3 tbsp chopped soft dates, or 1½–2 tbsp honey
- 1 tbsp raisins
- 2 tbsp slivered almonds and pistachios
- 1 tsp desi ghee (optional, for the nuts)
Method
- Bring the milk, cardamom and salt to a simmer over medium heat.
- Stir in the oats and raisins. Simmer 12–15 minutes over low heat, stirring often and scraping the bottom, until thick and creamy and the oats have almost dissolved.
- Add the dates for the last 3 minutes so they soften without turning the kheer brown. If using honey, stir it in off the heat.
- Warm the ghee in a small pan and toast the almonds and pistachios for 1 minute. Spoon over the kheer.
- Serve warm, or chill for 2 hours. Chilled kheer sets firm; loosen with a little cold milk before serving.
This is the weekend bowl, closer to dessert than breakfast, and still nothing artificial anywhere in it.
5. Oats and date laddu (no-bake, lunchbox)
Makes 12 · Prep 15 min · Roast 7 min · Chill 20 min · Frying pan, blender or fork
Ingredients
- 1 cup (90 g) rolled oats
- ½ cup (about 10) soft dates, pitted
- 3 tbsp finely chopped almonds, cashews and pistachios
- 1 tbsp desi ghee
- 1 tbsp desiccated coconut (optional)
- A pinch of cardamom and a pinch of salt
Method
- Dry-roast the oats over medium heat for 6–7 minutes until golden and nutty. Cool.
- Blend the dates with 1 tablespoon of warm water to a thick paste, or mash them with a fork if they are very soft.
- Warm the ghee, stir it into the date paste, then work in the oats, nuts, coconut, cardamom and salt until the mixture holds together when pressed. If it crumbles, add a teaspoon of warm water.
- Roll into 12 balls with lightly oiled hands. Chill 20 minutes to set.
- Keeps 1 week in the fridge in a lidded box. Two laddu and a glass of milk is a lunchbox that comes home empty.
For children under five, chop the nuts very fine or leave them out; whole nut pieces are a choking risk at that age.
Five mistakes that ruin dry fruit oats
- Nuts in from the start. They soften and disappear. Nuts go on at the end.
- No salt. A pinch makes milk taste like milk and dates taste sweeter.
- Instant oats in the overnight jar. They dissolve into paste. Rolled oats hold their shape.
- Sugar on top of dates. Taste first. Two dates and a teaspoon of raisins sweeten a whole bowl.
- Boiling hard. Milk catches and oats turn gluey. A lazy simmer and a stir every minute.
What a bowl gives you, honestly
These are standard food-composition ranges for the ingredients, not a lab test of any one bowl; a specific product's numbers belong on its label. The 10-minute milk bowl above, with two dates and two tablespoons of nuts, lands roughly here:
| Per 100 g, approximate | Energy | Protein | Fibre |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rolled oats | ~380 kcal | ~13 g | ~10 g |
| Almonds | ~580 kcal | ~21 g | ~12 g |
| Walnuts | ~650 kcal | ~15 g | ~7 g |
| Dates | ~280 kcal | ~2 g | ~7 g |
| Raisins | ~300 kcal | ~3 g | ~4 g |
| Full-fat milk (per 100 ml) | ~60 kcal | ~3 g | — |
| Recipe 1 bowl, as written | ~450–500 kcal | ~17 g | ~7 g |
That is a meal, not a snack, which is the point of oats with dry fruits: the oats bring beta-glucan, the soluble fibre behind the well-studied link between regular oats and healthy cholesterol; the nuts bring fat and protein that keep the bowl with you until lunch; the dates bring the sweetness without a sugar bowl. Oats benefits, and the nine ingredients that turn a bowl into a meal goes through each of these in turn.
Storage and reheating
- Cooked milk bowl: fridge, lidded, 2 days. Reheat in a pan with a splash of milk over low heat, stirring; or 60–90 seconds in the microwave, stir halfway. Add fresh nuts after reheating.
- Overnight oats: fridge, 2 days. Not for freezing.
- Premix: airtight jar, cool cupboard, 3 weeks; a month in the fridge in humid weather.
- Kheer: fridge, 3 days. Loosen with milk.
- Laddu: fridge, 1 week; freezer, 1 month.
Frequently asked questions
Can we eat oats with dry fruits every day?
Yes, as an everyday breakfast for most healthy adults and children: whole grain, nuts and dried fruit are ordinary foods. Keep the nuts to a couple of tablespoons and the dried fruit to a few pieces, and vary the nuts through the week. If you manage a medical condition, ask your doctor how oats and dried fruit fit your plan.
Which dry fruits are best with oats?
Almonds and walnuts for the nuts, dates and raisins for sweetness. That combination covers crunch, richness, sweetness and chew from four ingredients. Pistachios, cashews, figs and pumpkin seeds are the next four to add.
Can I eat nuts with oats?
Yes. (And no, oats are not nuts themselves — a grain, explained here.) Nuts and oats are one of the oldest breakfast pairings there is: the oats bring slow carbohydrate and fibre, the nuts bring fat and protein, and together the bowl keeps you full far longer than oats alone. Add them at the end so they stay crisp.
How many nuts should I put in a bowl of oats?
Two to three tablespoons of mixed nuts per half-cup of dry oats, about 20–25 g. More than that and the bowl becomes a nut dish with some oats in it, and the calories climb quickly.
Should I soak the dry fruits before adding them to oats?
Soak dry dates (chhuara) and very hard figs for 10–20 minutes in warm water. Soft dates, raisins and all nuts need no soaking; almonds can be soaked overnight if you prefer them soft and peeled, but it is a preference, not a rule.
Do I add dry fruits before or after cooking the oats?
Dried fruit before, nuts after. Dates and raisins cooked with the oats soften and sweeten the whole pot; nuts cooked with the oats go soggy and lose their flavour.
Is oats with dry fruits good for weight loss?
It can fit a weight-loss diet because oats and nuts are filling for their size, but a bowl with two tablespoons of nuts and milk is 450–500 calories, a full meal. Weight change comes from the whole day's eating, not from one food; treat this as a satisfying breakfast, not a slimming one.
Can I make oats with dry fruits without milk?
Yes. Cook the oats in water with a full pinch of salt and stir in a spoon of dahi or a teaspoon of ghee at the end for body; or use the premix with hot water. The dates and raisins carry the flavour either way.
Are oats with dry fruits good for children?
Yes for school-age children; the laddu and the milk bowl are the two they usually accept. For children under five, chop nuts finely or leave them out because of choking risk, and go easy on the dates. Nashta for school mornings has three more bowls that get eaten.
Can I use instant oats instead of rolled oats?
For the hot milk bowl and the kheer, yes, with a minute less cooking and slightly less liquid. For overnight oats and the premix, no; instant oats turn to paste when soaked and to dust when roasted. Whole rolled oats are the right choice for all five. Why the four cuts behave so differently in a bowl is explained in Which oats to buy in Pakistan.
What is the difference between oats with nuts and muesli or granola?
Oats with nuts is raw or lightly roasted oats mixed with nuts and dried fruit and nothing else. Muesli is the same idea, usually with added cereal flakes. Granola is oats baked in oil and sugar or honey until clustered and crisp, which is why it is the sweetest and most calorie-dense of the three.
Which fruit is best with oats?
Among dried fruit, dates; they sweeten and add fibre without any added sugar. Among fresh fruit, banana and apple, both of which also appear dried in the better jars of oats with nuts.
